Our skin is our bulletin board and innuendo about where you are along the journey of life. This is always going to happen, like it or not. Do you have wrinkles? It is a statement that you are moving forward in years. Age spots? It is an advertisement that you have spent time in the sun. Stretch marks? Well, here’s a lot you could be saying, including how to get rid of stretch marks. Of course, stretch marks bother us all, and it especially doesn’t help that they appear in sexy places. Granted, your upper arms may not be the hottest thing since sliced bread, but stretch marks frequently form on the thighs, hips, breasts, and buttocks. And when you take off your clothes to enjoy your desired bath on that beautiful Caribbean beach, oops! Sucks.

If that hurts, take a deep breath, and now you have company. Estimates suggest that 90% of women who have given birth develop these telltale signs of age. Of course, that’s still little comfort when you take your clothes off, so if you have stretch marks and they hurt your confidence, I have good news. Keep reading!

First, what are stretch marks? Let’s get to that.

Stretch marks, or striae, are thin white scars in striped formations where the skin has been stretched. Think of them as scars that form from the inside out within areas where the skin is particularly susceptible to tears. These areas include:

  • breasts
  • stomach
  • thighs
  • arms
  • buttocks

And while the myth that stretch marks occur when the skin has been stretched to its breaking point is true, more is happening than you might imagine.

What Causes Stretch Marks?

Contrary to popular belief, stretch marks are much more than the fact that the skin has been stretched too far. Stretch marks occur for a variety of reasons. For us, the most obvious, of course, is pregnancy. But stretch marks can also occur in adolescence due to weight gain and some medical conditions as well. Even lifting weights. Do you guys get it? The striae are not exclusive to women.

Stretch marks occur when the body secretes the glucocorticoid hormone during pregnancy. And this hormone prevents collagen and elastin fibroblasts necessary for healthy, firm skin.

The loss of these supporting proteins is detrimental to the skin and separates into the deeper layers. This results in the angry red stretch marks that eventually give way to, you guessed it, stretch marks.

Other compelling reasons contribute to the appearance of these marks.

Collagen We said it there.

On its own, collagen doesn’t seem important. But for those who carry the raging lines of stretch marks, it is nothing short of a miracle. And considering that up to 90% of women develop stretch marks due to pregnancy and use them as a biological marker of where they have been, collagen-based therapy will be your new best friend when you remove your clothes.

The role of collagen

Collagen is the protein that provides rigidity to the connective tissues within the skin. Collagen is abundant when we are young, which explains why our skin is smooth and without wrinkles. Unfortunately, we lose collagen with age and, therefore, the sagging skin of our senior years.

Well, it turns out, it’s not just parenting time that depletes collagen. Some life events, such as adolescence, weight gain, weight lifting, and, yes, pregnancy, stimulate the body to increase the production of a hormone called glucocorticoids. And this hormone prevents the collagen fibroblasts necessary for the skin to repair itself when it is traumatized.

Without enough collagen, your skin deteriorates. The skin is separated into its deepest layers, and voila! You get stretch marks.

This is why we need collagen!

Hope for people with stretch marks

First, let’s go over how you can treat stretch marks and why stretch mark therapy should be at the top of your list for stretch mark-free skin.

About stretch mark treatment

There are surgical treatments for stretch marks, including dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser surgery. The results of surgical treatments are variable and depend largely on the age and condition of the skin. These treatments show moderate success, although insurance plans rarely cover them.

You can also eat well, on a skin-friendly diet. The skin likes foods rich in vitamins A and C, zinc, and protein. Consider salmon and oily fish, walnuts, carrots, milk, and eggs. Your skin loves these foods, and you would do well to make them a regular part of your diet for healthy skin and an excellent complexion. If any food reduces the formation of stretch marks, these are.
